The Dr Sketchys story starts in a small venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2005. The brainchild of artist Molly Crabapple and illustrator AV Phibes, people were invited to draw local personalities and burlesque performers while having a drink in this uber cool venue. Sadly, the Lucky Cat closed its doors, but the OG Dr Sketchys lives on at the Flute Champagne Bar in midtown Manhattan.
From the original incarnation, Dr Sketchys branches have popped all over the world including Berlin, Tokyo, Montreal, Lima, Paris, Edinburgh, London and even Antarctica. Wherever you are, you can always find a Dr Sketchys should you feel the need to put pencil to paper.
The Sydney branch was started in 2007 and has become the most successful branch outside of New York. Within the walls of the Arthouse Hotel in Sydney’s CBD, originally an art school built in 1836 - now a bustling three level bar and function space, Dr Sketchys meets monthly to bring a rich and colourful event to the people of Sydney.
Run by Event Producer Alisa Angell, the community of people that have become a part of Sketchys is what makes it such a magical space.
“I really love that when you walk into Dr Sketchys, there is a real sense of belonging", There are so many factors that make this event special, Its not just the exceptional talent that bring big-stage energy to our little stage, or the dedicated crew it is the open minded people that come to draw that makes Dr Sketchy so spesh! I’m incredibly proud of the Dr Sketchys community we’ve built here!
It’s truly a space for everyone and anyone!” Alisa x
